Moving and Storage: How to Get Away and Survive a Last Minute Move

A moving company that offers moving and storage solutions can be a lifesaver when it comes to a last minute move

A moving company that offers moving and storage solutions can be a lifesaver when it comes to a last minute move

Has your landlord left you in a lurch? Did your house sell faster than anticipated? Are you planning a long-term trip and renting your house out? Are you renovating a home? Don’t panic. Even if you don’t have a new place or a solid plan sorted out yet, there is help out there to move, protect and store your goods.

First, seek out last minute movers that offer all-inclusive services, including moving and storage, so you can rest easy knowing your belongings will be protected while you embark on your next journey.

A phone call or click away

Finding the right moving company is key for a last-minute move that may require extra services. Do your homework by seeking advice via testimonials and going to sites such as the Canadian Association of Movers (CAM) or the Better Business Bureau to find a reputable company in your area. Ask at least three movers for estimates on not only how much it will cost for your move, but for the conditions on last-minute moving as well if they offer packing and storage.

Once you’ve chosen a moving company, get the terms and conditions for your move in writing. And finally, make sure you have the right insurance for all your goods by asking what your moving company will cover as part of your negotiated price, and if you need to purchase extra compensation for storage purposes or any other specialty service.

Stow away or store away

If you are like many retired Canadians and like to fly south for winter, but are also interested in renting your home while you’re gone, or if you are renovating your home and need to protect your valuable and precious items, a reputable moving company should be able to help. Some moving companies offer moving and storage, whether it’s for a long-term or short-term duration.

Here are some ways to make sure your goods will be protected:

  • Find out who the packers and movers will be. Some moving companies hire outside their realm.
  • What kind of storage facility it is: Is it an indoor, secure warehouse facility? Does it offer a climate-controlled environment?
  • Does the moving company offer container storage for short-term storing needs? And will they load, move, store, and unload the container?
  • Do they offer vehicle, boat or RV storage? Many people don’t want to leave these expensive items unsecured. Find out how the vehicle will be moved and what kind of facility or container it will be kept in.

Up, up and away

Sometimes a last-minute move can involve travelling a long distance, which can add to the stress. This is where storage can really make a difference. A reputable moving company should be able to hold your possessions for a week or two, or longer, before meeting you at your new destination.
