What Office Managers Ask Movers

Office managers tasked with getting moving quotes for an office move should be asking these questions.

Office managers tasked with getting moving quotes for an office move should be asking these questions.

Leave it to the pros. It’s a saying you hear often in business, especially when it comes to an important task that needs doing. You don’t want to leave anything to chance. This same way of thinking should be applied when it comes to a move or relocation into a new office. You want to make sure your documents, equipment, furniture and other items will be handled in the most professional manner when moving.

For an office manager who is tasked with getting moving quotes from commercial movers, due diligence is required. Here are 3 things you should ask a moving company to get that seal of approval before you make a move:

1. Are they accredited?

There are many movers out there that use the word “professional,” but how can you ensure you are not being fed lip service, especially when it comes to a commercial move. Business movers should be accredited and be able to show their experience in commercial moving. Office managers can check into a company’s credentials via these means:

  • See if the company is listed with your closest branch of the Better Business Bureau and see if there have been any complaints filed against it
  • Check if the company is a member of the Canadian Association of Movers
  • Use the Government of Canada’s consumer moving checklist for choosing a moving company
  • Look for reviews and testimonials on social media and on the company’s website

2. What moving services do they offer?

When getting a moving quote from a commercial mover, find out all that is involved.

Other than finding out if your selected moving companies have experience in office and commercial moving, you should also ask these questions:

  • Are they professional in other ways, with uniformed movers, pleasant office staff, etc.?
  • Do they have a strong and organized pre-move plan?
  • Do they hire movers from within the company or outside?
  • Do they have specialized and custom equipment for lifting heavy and fragile items such as vending/coffee machines, safes, filing cases, computers, etc.?
  • Can they do basic installations of your equipment?
  • Do they have storage facilities in case of any renovation work or other delays?

3. What’s insured?

Let’s face it; there are things that can go wrong in an office move or relocation. The best way to protect your company is to make sure you have comprehensive insurance. Your commercial movers should offer either released value protection or replacement value protection during transit to cover any accidental loss or damage. Your moving quotes should also list the cost of insurance for storage if any is required. And finally, you should read the movers’ claims procedure, so there are no surprises that could surface down the road.
