Packers and Movers: 5 Tips on Keeping Cool when Moving in Summer

Our packers and movers suggest you avoid dehydration by drinking plenty of water.

Our packers and movers suggest you avoid dehydration by drinking plenty of water.

Okanagan residents tend to slap on the sunscreen and seek shade when it comes to surviving these hot, hazy days of summer. However, that’s not always an option when you’re moving your home or business during the hottest months of the year. Our packers and movers at Bekins Kelowna are here to help. Stay cool with these tips on how to not get overheated or worn out when packing and moving, and get your moving company to help reduce the stress and sweat!

1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

Hot and humid weather mixed with packing, lifting, and cleaning can cause our bodies to lose water. That’s why fluid intake during a move is imperative. The average adult should drink at least 6-8 litres of water a day, and even more during extreme heat and while performing tasks. Some of the signs of dehydration include:

  • Extreme thirst
  • Muscle cramps
  • Dry skin
  • Fatigue
  • Dark-coloured urine
  • Dizziness and confusion

2. Give Yourself a Break

Packing and moving can be a tedious job at the best of times, but especially when the temperature rises. Don’t leave your packing to the hottest time of day. Start early in the morning and take breaks throughout the day. Go for a walk or to the beach. Take a shower. Cool off. Don’t rush.

3. Don’t Exceed Your Limits

Rushing around while packing and moving can cause significant stress, especially when the thermometer level is high. Alleviate those hot flashes by making a moving checklist of small tasks you can take on each day before you move. Try not to burden yourself with all the heavy lifting all in one day. Instead, spread out the tasks. Pack your china one day. Clean the bathroom on another day. Everything will get done if you pace yourself.

4. Seek Shelter

If most of your packing or moving is taking place under the hot sun, it's imperative that you protect yourself from dangerous UV rays. Avoid sunstroke and heat exhaustion by wearing a hat and shades and applying sunscreen. Seek shelter in the garage, under a tree or inside as much as you can. And don't forget to drink plenty of water!
