How to Screen a New Roommate, Before Moving In Together

Make sure your potential roommate is compatible with your needs and wants before you start packing and moving in.

Make sure your potential roommate is compatible with your needs and wants before you start packing and moving in.

Looking for college roomies and someone to share the rent with can be tough, especially when you don’t know who will be answering your wanted ad. No one wants to live with someone who has never vacuumed or washed a dish before. Do your due diligence before moving in with a roommate by setting your expectations, asking the right questions, doing your research, and writing down everything.

Check out these tips from our Kelowna moving company:

Set Clear Expectations in Your Ad

If you are posting a roommate wanted ad on an online classified site, make sure it is with a reputable source that will not attract spam. Some universities and colleges offer classified sites or bulletin boards to help students looking for shared accommodation. Make sure the ad is clear and direct and add a brief description of your expectations. Some things to consider include:

  • If pets are OK
  • If you desire a non-smoker
  • If you prefer a quiet roommate or someone to socialize with
  • Musical instruments (pianos)
  • What the shared housekeeping duties are
  • If utilities, phone, and cable are to be shared
  • Your areas of interest

Ask the Right Questions

For safety reasons, it’s crucial to meet all potential roommates in a neutral location, such as a coffee shop or on campus, before visiting any residence together. Once meeting, ask your house-sharing candidate the following questions:

  • Do you have a source of income?
  • Where have you lived before?
  • What are your housekeeping habits?
  • Do you have pets?
  • What can you afford in rent?
  • Will you have friends, family, or a partner over often?
  • What is your daily schedule?
  • Do you have reliable transportation?
  • Do you smoke/vape?
  • Do you like to cook?
  • Are you allergic to anything?
  • What would you say is your best quality?
  • Do you have any bad habits?
  • How long do you plan to stay?
  • Do you have a previous landlord/or employer that I can contact?

Do Your Research

Once you have your questions answered and have narrowed down your selection to 1-3 candidates, then it’s time to find out more about who will be living with you.

  • Contact the references provided
  • Get proof of employment
  • See if you have any mutual friends that you can ask
  • Check their social media posts
  • Ask them to conduct a criminal record check
  • Ask for their credit history

Get Everything Down in Writing

Before movers deliver you and your roommates’ belongings to your shared accommodation, make sure to go over a rental agreement that you all agree upon. List expected rent, utility costs, and expectations and make sure all parties sign the document. It also helps to create a cleaning and food sharing schedule to avoid future conflicts.
