Relocating a business or office can come with its own set of needs. A moving company that offers commercial movers and speciality moving services has to be well equipped for a number of tasks at hand. Sometimes there are special circumstances where certain rules have to be followed during a move, as was the case when Bekins Kelowna Moving and Storage moved the Kelowna RCMP into their new detachment in June.
Here’s how it all went down:
The Kelowna RCMP serves a number of jurisdictions in the Okanagan. Besides the city proper, the detachment oversees Lake Country (Winfield, Oyama, Okanagan Centre, Carrs Landing), West Kelowna, Peachland, Westbank First Nation, the Regional District of the Central Okanagan, Okanagan Lake, and Big White Ski Resort. Once located on Doyle Avenue, the new Kelowna detachment on Richter Avenue is located only a few blocks away. However, when it came to the move, Bekins’ office movers were tasked with moving items from four different locations.
All hands on deck
As one of the most trusted moving companies in Kelowna, Bekins moved the items of more than 250 staff members into the new detachment.
“All my staff had to have special security clearance and we completed the move over the course of two months,” said Bekins Kelowna Moving and Storage general manager Nathan Miller. “We did day, evening, and weekend moves as the RCMP could not be shut down at all, so there was a lot of extra coordination involved to have no downtime.”
Loading the case files
Due to sensitive materials that had to be moved, including from the CSI (crime scene investigation) unit and the records department, Bekins’ business movers had to use some its specialty equipment to move 3,500 totes of paper files, again making sure that it didn’t interrupt the daily needs of the RCMP and their paperwork.
“We also had police escorts both in our trucks and police vehicles escorting us when we moved exhibits and the lock-up items,” said Miller.
With more than 30 pieces of equipment and added speciality moving services such as packing and unpacking, commercial storage, and basic installation of equipment, Bekins’ team of more than 25 packers and movers was able to get the Kelowna RCMP into their new headquarters on time and within budget.
