When it comes to downsizing, less is more. If you’re like most people, you’ve spent years accumulating stuff, stuff and more stuff — some of it precious and full of memories and others, not so much. So how do you decide what to keep and what to “downsize,” and how can house movers help you navigate one of the most exciting and daunting phases of life? Let’s jump into some simple questions you can ask yourself and a few easy things you can do when it’s time to downsize.

Take Your Time

There’s a famous story about a yogi guru who ate an entire U.S. Army Jeep. How did he do it? One little bite at a time. The same is true for downsizing. Pick a small area to declutter or downsize and work on that. It could be a single junk drawer or a seldom-used closet. Start there and be happy with the work you’ve done. Don’t worry that you’ve got a lot more to do. Moving is a big job (like eating a Jeep!), and it’s best to take your time not to become overwhelmed.

Plan Ahead

You may have cherished furniture that you don’t have room for but aren’t ready to part with or have promised to children who don’t have room for them yet. Identify how much space you’ll have in your new place and what you’ll need to fill it. See how Bekins Kelowna moving services can assist you in storing everything that doesn’t fit and ensure that when those cherished pieces have a new home, they’ll be safely ready to travel.

Find Joy in Your Stuff

Marie Kondo, the organizing consultant and TV show host, talks about “finding joy” in your possessions, and this is an excellent place to start when it comes to downsizing. What this means is looking at your stuff and asking yourself, “Does this blender, throw pillow or zebra-print rug bring me joy. If the answer is “no” or even “I don’t know,” then you can rest easy by donating, selling or even tossing it. Again, this can be a deep, emotional experience, so there’s no need to rush or stress out. You’ll find that as you rid yourself of things that don’t bring you joy, the items you do love stand out even more. You’ll rest easy knowing that our Kelowna house movers will treat all of your possessions not as “stuff” but as valued objects that bring joy.
