Moving day is a major undertaking, and making sure you’re prepared will go a long way toward ensuring the journey to your new home is worry-free. Ask a professional mover and they’ll agree: there are certain things you’ll want close at hand while you’re on the road.

Most people don’t move all that often, so it’s easy to overlook some of the small details that can make a big difference in how your day unfolds. While most of your belongings can be stowed away in boxes and left for your moving company to handle, it’s a good idea to keep the following items readily accessible.

1. Moving Documentation

Whether you’re moving long distance, or just across town, it’s a good idea to keep a record of your moving paperwork nearby. This will include:

  • Inventory sheets
  • Shipping receipts
  • Your moving company's contact information

If you’ll be travelling a long distance, it’s also a good idea to gather all of your travel documents in one, safely-kept file:

  • Passports
  • Plane tickets
  • Car rental agreements
  • Hotel and restaurant reservations

2. Medication

In your quest to pack up your house, it’s easy to get carried away. When you’re going through your medicine cabinet, be sure to take a little extra time to think of the items you might want to remain accessible while you’re travelling:

  • Allergy medication
  • Prescriptions
  • First-aid kit

While you’re at it, this is an opportune time to check for expiry dates.

 3. Toiletries

Whether you’re overnighting in a hotel, or you’re meeting your Kelowna mover at the new home on the same day, you’ll thank yourself for packing some basic toiletries in a separate travel bag:

  • Toothbrush
  • Combs and brushes
  • Shaving kit
  • Soap and shampoo
  • Deodorant
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Cosmetics
  • Hair product
  • Towel and facecloth
  • Extra set of clothes

4. Things for Children

Your moving day will require your full concentration, and sometimes children can get overlooked as a result. To keep them happy, assemble a collection of their favourite toys. If you’re travelling a longer distance, portable DVD players can be a lifesaver.

5. Food and Drink

To keep your energy level up, it’s a good idea to have a selection of snack and beverage items at the ready while you travel to your new place. This can also save time (and money) if you’re in a hurry, as you won’t have to make as many restaurant stops along the way.

6. Packing supplies

Inevitably, there will be something you forget to pack. You might have missed a cupboard full of extra dishware, or perhaps you overlooked the nook under the stairs that holds your vinyl record collection. Having the following packing supplies on hand will help you take care of matters quickly:

  • Boxes
  • Tape
  • Packing material
  • Felt marker
