Kelowna Mover: Packing Tips for Moving After the Holidays
Posted on January 24, 2019
Plan ahead on how you can declutter and get organized before your Kelowna mover arrives.
Just as many of us do after the holidays, we tend to make a list of goals we’d like to accomplish throughout the year. You can do the same thing when you move. Make a moving and packing list in the same way you’d do with your new year’s resolutions. Consider the things you’d like to get done before your Kelowna mover arrives and then get down to business.
Book your Movers Just After the Holidays
If it’s 2-3 months before your moving day, make a pre-moving checklist and start by looking for the best moving companies in Kelowna that offer free estimates and consultations before booking your chosen movers. Make sure your movers can handle big-ticket items such as vehicles, pool tables, hot tubs, and other valuable items. If you have a priceless instrument, you may want to check to see if the moving company offers specialty piano movers.
Take Out Most of the Old and Some of the New
Start by sorting through your household goods. Make a list of what you need, what you want, and what you are indifferent or don’t care about. Start decluttering by selling or donating those unwanted items from your indifferent list to thrift/charity shops. If you still have too much stuff, then go through your “what you want” list and see if you can make some cutbacks there. One way is to gift items you no longer need to friends and family.
Pack at Least One Month Before Your Move
By this point, your Christmas tree and holiday decorations will hopefully be either packed, or given away, and you can get down to the task at hand.
Begin by collecting packing supplies such as boxes, newspaper, and packing peanuts, or contact your packers and movers for moving supplies. Then start by packing the items in your most unused rooms (basement/storage area, guest bedroom, extra bathroom) and go from there. It also helps to clean said rooms right after you’ve packed to prevent you from having to do a rush cleaning right before your moving day.
Make Those Very Last Resolutions
Once you’ve finished packing your belongings, make an inventory of the contents and try to determine the value of your items, which will help when it comes to insurance coverage. Other things to take care of include:
- Cleaning your old residence (including carpets)
- Putting in a change of address with the post office, bank, etc.
- Notifying phone/utility companies of your move
- Cancelling subscriptions
- Arranging with your realtor/landlord where to leave/pick up deposits/keys for your old/new residence
- Booking storage if needed
- Making travel arrangements
