Moving Tips: 5 Unwieldy Objects During a Move

Hiring piano movers is one way to alleviate a lot of stress and strain from a move.

Hiring piano movers is one way to alleviate a lot of stress and strain from a move.

When it comes to transporting musical instruments, it’s hard to argue that piano movers have the hardest job. Saxophones, trombones and even tubas don’t really compare. A single person can lift them with no special equipment. That’s hardly the case for a piano and many other unwieldy objects around the home.

Sometimes, it’s not just the size or weight of an object that makes it hard to move. Some specialty items, such as pool tables and hot tubs, have fragile components that require extra consideration.

Weighing anywhere from 300 to 1,000 pounds, pianos require considerable skill to transport without damaging it, your surroundings or yourself. That’s why hiring expert piano movers is always preferable to going the DIY route.

It requires careful planning and some serious manpower to maneuver a piano safely. Here are some moving tips that might help:

  • Source the appropriate ramps, dollies and straps
  • Plan your route, measuring entranceways
  • Secure lids and covers
  • Protect keys and pedals
  • Wrap the body in padded moving blankets

Hot Tubs

Hot tubs are a tremendous source of relaxation…until you have to move one. Similar in weight to a grand piano (about 800 pounds), you’ll need some willing helpers to transfer one successfully.

Furthermore, every time you move a hot tub, you risk developing a leak in the plumbing, as even a slight bump can disturb seals. It’s important to use dollies and straps to secure the item, especially if you’re moving over uneven terrain. You will also need to:

  • Remove the lid
  • Disconnect the power
  • Drain and thoroughly dry the tub

Pool Tables

Organization is key when moving a pool table. They’re too heavy to move intact, so you will need to disassemble it first. That typically means removing the:

  • Rails
  • Felt
  • Slate
  • Legs

Be sure to have plenty of sealable containers for the hardware, and label them clearly so that you know how to reassemble it. The slate alone can weigh well in excess of 500 pounds, and it needs to be handled gently to avoid damage.

By their nature, safes are hard to move. They wouldn’t be much use if you could simply pick them up and walk off.

First, it’s good to know the make and model of your strongbox, so you know its dimensions and how much it weighs. After that, you can begin planning your route and collect the appropriate equipment. At the very least, you’ll want a heavy-duty hand truck or appliance dolly, as well as the help of a few strong friends.

Art is a bit of a double-whammy. It can be both heavy and delicate at the same time. Since it's typically a unique piece, it's not necessarily designed to be moved around too often. Which means you encounter the difficulty of keeping it safe while trying to move it. Your best bet is to have it packed professionally and moved with care.

If you have any doubt about moving any of these items, you’re better off calling a mover to do it for you. For more this, read: 5 Reasons to Use a Kelowna Mover for Specialty Items.
