Start with the Bathroom(s)

When it comes to decluttering, it helps to start with the smallest room that has the least amount of furniture. Your bathroom is the most likely candidate.

Places to check for items in the bathroom include:

  • Under the sink
  • In the closet
  • On the shelves
  • In the medicine cabinet
  • In the shower/bathtub

Sort your items and throw out, donate, or recycle:

  • Expired medicines and beauty supplies
  • Ripped or faded towels
  • Broken items such as hand mirrors
  • Extra bottles of shampoo, etc.

Move to the Bedroom(s)

For some, decluttering a bedroom is a huge task. Many of us use our bedrooms to store clothes, books, valuables such as jewelry, and other personal items.

When sorting out your bedroom, consider these tips from Marie Kondo, author of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up and Spark Joy.

  1. Get each family member to help declutter his or her bedroom
  2. Arrange clothes in a pile
  3. Sort items by colour
  4. Use the KonMari folding method
  5. Leave sentimental items for last
  6. Only keep things that spark joy

Tackle the Kitchen Next

When it comes to decluttering a kitchen, it helps to move through the different zones of your kitchen and focus on one category at a time.

Sort through your:

  • Utensils
  • Glassware
  • Dishes
  • Cookware
  • Baking items
  • Small appliances
  • Recipe books

Remove duplicate or underused items, and don’t forget to check your oven drawer, one of the most commonly missed packing spots.

Level Out Your Livingroom and Den

Home to large furniture, living rooms, and dens are where we store multiple items that can take up a lot of space. Think of all those video games, records, books, art pieces, and electronics.

Decluttering for a move is an excellent excuse to get rid of or fix that broken lamp or sell that couch you no longer need. Make sure to check for unwanted items on, inside, and under:

  • Bookshelves
  • Walls
  • Side drawers
  • Ottomans
  • Coffee tables
  • Couches and chairs
  • TV stands

Leave the Biggest Jobs for Last

Basements, garages, attics, laundry rooms, and sheds are often the places where we store items we no longer want or need. As they say, one person's junk is another person's treasure! Take your time and go through all the items you can sell online or through a garage sale.
