Make decluttering one of your New Year’s resolutions.

The new year is just around the corner, which means so are peoples' resolutions. Besides eating healthier and going to the gym, many people's resolutions include decluttering their homes - and it's a good one. As the new year brings new hope, having a feeling of being lighter (figuratively speaking) in your home, will create a sense of calm. But, this isn't always an easy task, since most people hold some sort of attachment to their belongings. As moving and storage experts, we're here to tell you that you don't have to throw everything in your home out to declutter. If you are looking to declutter for the new year, consider looking at storage options such as a portable storage container or self-storage locker.

Where To Begin

Yes, we understand that decluttering your home can be overwhelming. The best thing you can do is take your time, which is one of the reasons why a mobile storage container is a great option. When you rent a storage container from your local moving services company, they deliver it right to your property. Having a storage unit that close means you don't have to load your belongings into the back of a moving truck to transport them to a storage rental locker. Start with one room and go from there.

Have A System

Whether you have a few items or loads and loads to sort through, always have a system. Pulling everything out of a room and creating another pile in another room (in a way) puts you back to square one. To optimize your storage, use a three-pile system. As you remove items from a room, put them in a "keep," "donate," or "throw-away" pile. You could add a fourth pile which signifies that you are unsure and you can go back to it at the end once you've determined how much space is left in your storage container.

Loading Your Storage Container

The last thing you want to do is declutter your home, only to clutter your storage unit. Once you've sorted all of your belongings room by room, organize the "keep" pile. The best way to store your items in a storage container is by using stackable moving boxes such as plastic bins; or even better, clear ones.

Keep Yourself Organized

To take the organizing one step further, write a list of everything in a plastic bin and tape it to the outside. Trust us, this will make it way easier to find something you are looking for. Load items that are used the least to the back of the container and keep more frequently used things at the front.
