Vernon Movers' Tips: 5 Ways Renters Can Clean Their Way Through a Move
Posted on March 13, 2018
Before your Vernon movers arrive, use these cleaning and moving tips to get your full damage deposit back.
You’ve finally found your dream home and can finally say goodbye to that rental you’ve been living in the past few years.
While cleaning a home before you make a move is a common courtesy, in the case of a rental, it is a necessary task in order to claim your damage deposit.
If you’re hoping for a clean “walk through” so that your rental’s move-out condition is as good as it was when you moved in, follow these 5 moving tips offered by Bekins’ Vernon movers.
1. Wax on, wax off
Stained carpets are one of the top things landlords notice when checking for damage. A carpet cleaner along with stain removal can normally do the trick to remove mild stains as well as pet hair.
For something stuck on such as candle wax, try folding a slightly damp white cotton towel and placing it on the wax. Then press a hot iron over the towel and hold it for 10 seconds. Repeat until the wax has been completely drawn out of the carpet.
2. Fill that hole in the wall
If you’ve been using your rental space as a makeshift art gallery, you’ll likely have a number of holes resulting from pounding nails into the drywall to hang pictures and paintings.
If you have no time to apply spackling paste and sandpaper the holes, or paint the entire wall, try applying a small amount of wall putty into the hole and then wipe the excess with a damp rag. If the hole is still apparent, you can try applying a small amount of similar coloured paint with an artist paintbrush to touch it up.
For white walls, try rubbing a bar of Ivory soap or white toothpaste to fill the hole then use a dry rag to wipe the excess away.
3. Free the fridge
While it’s usually standard practice to clean kitchen cupboards, cabinets, countertops and sinks, you will likely have to tackle the large appliances as well.
The best way to clean a fridge before your house movers arrive is to:
- Unplug the fridge and start cleaning while the freezer defrosts
- Place a towel or rag around the base to capture any melted water
- Empty all the contents and place in a cooler with ice
- Remove drawers and shelves
- Scrub and deodorize with a mix of vinegar, baking soda and water
- For lingering smells, place a plate of coffee grounds into the fridge
4. Add sparkle without the scrub
Cleaning a bathroom so it sparkles can be one of the most tiresome chores, and a killer on your back. The best way to avoid scrubbing for long periods of time is to use an oxidizing solution to remove soap scum and stains off shower walls, sinks, bathtubs and toilets.
Try mixing baking soda, vinegar and 2 tbsp. of hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle, then stir in 1 tsp. of lemon-scented dish soap. Apply to all surfaces and then use a sponge or brush to clean.
5. Hire packers and movers
If you find yourself in a last-minute moving situation, there is a way to save yourself some time and stress. Look for movers that don’t just move your items come moving day, but also offer content packing services. See if they can come a few days early to pack your items. That way your apartment or house will be cleared even sooner, so you can concentrate on cleaning.
